Insensitivity Towards Stage 4 Metastic Breast Cancer Patients

During Pink October, personal stories of many Breast Cancer (BC) patients appear in the media. I came across one that brought me to tears not because it was so moving, but because it was so insensitive toward stage 4 Metastic Breast Cancer (MBC) patients. This early stage BC patient wished she could be stage 4 so she could die and not have to deal with the financial and mental stress of a cancer diagnosis. How can anyone believe financial security is more precious than life?

I would give up anything to again live cancer free. All MBC patients are given a death sentence at diagnosis; the only uncertainty is when that death sentence will take place. Life expectancy for most MBC patients is 2-3 years; I am incredibly grateful to have lived 6.5 years with MBC. We MBC patients will be in treatment for the rest of our lives; when we run out of treatments that work, we will die.

Always remember to be grateful to be alive and that you can get through anything when you don’t give up.
