Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day 2019

Today is metastatic breast cancer (MBC) awareness day. This is breast cancer that has spread beyond the breast to another organ like the bones, brain, or liver and it represents 30% of all breast cancers. MBC kills 116 patients every day because there is no cure.

Until there is a cure for MBC, no one with breast cancer can ever be certain that they are cured. 30% of early stage patients will develop MBC after being successfully treated. Sadly, early detection, treatment, and surgery cannot guarantee the cancer will not return. It is something no one wants to talk about because it is so frightening.

Many folks don’t realize that MBC is terminal thanks to the pink ribbon campaigns. A lot of MBC patients look healthy and remain active despite being terminally ill. After one of my dance performances, a well-meaning gentleman said how happy he was that I was cured. He was shocked to learn that I was still in treatment and would be so until my death. He asked how is it possible for me to dance, reinforcing the misconception that all MBC patients are bedridden.

Please pray for a cure for MBC, and if you can, please donate to an organization like @metavivor where 100% of all donations go to MBC research.
